Blackpool Light Parade Weekend – September 4th-7th 2009

Can YOU stop PapJoe claiming the Best Lit Bike Trophy for the 3rd year running?

Can YOU stop Papa Joe claiming the Best Lit Bike Trophy for the 3rd year running?

The Annual Blackpool GoldWing Light Parade is quite simply UK’s brightest and best GoldWing Event.

Each September, large numbers of brightly decorated and illuminated GoldWings parade along the Promenade through the Illuminations watched by thousands of cheering spectators.   There’s really nothing else like it anywhere in the world; a visitor from the US who has been to many large GoldWing Events described it as the best motorcycle parade he’s ever seen.

This year the Parade takes place on Saturday September 5th.  The bikes will leave Pontin’s Holiday Centre at about 7.30pm to ride 7 miles northwards and then seven miles back again along almost the full length of the Promenade.

Most Wingers stay at Pontin’s for the weekend, where there is quite a party atmosphere over a three night stay with special entertainment, a Best Lit Bike Competition, ride outs and other features to make a really enjoyable weekend of friendship and fun.

You don’t have to stay at Pontin’s to join in although that’s by far the best way to do so.  If you ride your Wing into the Pontin’s site between 6.30pm and 7pm on Saturday you will be allowed to join in for the evening, whether or not you are resident at Pontin’s.  Even if you prefer not to ride the Illuminations with everyone else it’s worth going to Blackpool to see this terrific spectacle.

There will also be a large display of GoldWings  parked on the Promenade on the Saturday afternoon.  There will be a riding arena in which skilled riding demonstrations will take place and there will be an exhibition of GoldWings and Accessories by Knutsford Honda, the Event’s Main Sponsor, and other attractions too.  There’s even going to be a face painting artist for the children (and the young at heart) come along and bring them along – it’s going to be a fun family occasion.

The Promenade Display will take place this year at Waterloo Road Headland, which is a short stroll northwards from South Pier.  There will be lots of crowds and lots to see and do.  The Display takes place between 11am and 5pm on Saturday 5th September.

So don’t miss the famous annual GoldWing Light Parade at Blackpool Illuminations, also known as “Pose on the Prom”.  For further information please visit the Blackpool Light Parade website.

It’s a Great Weekend!

Hi Paul…And thank you for your kind comments about my trike, Can you tell us where you are from Paul and let us know what kind of Goldwing you have, will you be coming to this years BLP…???

  2. Biggles and Ginger says:

I had many bikes before my wing trike but always found it hard to find decent friends but since joining the Goldwings Northwest its more like family and when we meet other wingers it becomes an even bigger family – love it. The thing I like is that EVERY goldwing solo or trike is different which is amazing. How big can the family get???

  3. Papajoe says:

Well said Steven………in Glasgow i collect funds for the sick childrens hospital in Yorkhill and i let all the kids sit on my trike to have their photos taken, and i hear them all saying things like when i grow up i am going to buy one of these or please mum can i have one of these for Christmas……..LOL

Hi Ginger and Papajoe, Yes I agree with both of you, it is the taking part and crowd appreciation which gives me the buzz. We all spend a lot of time and effort in preparation for this event adding lights and chrome to show off our pride and joy. Of course I think mine is the best looking bike whilst riding up and down Blackpools Prom and all eyes are on me, just like everyone else thinks too. There’s nothing wrong with feeling proud of one’s Goldwing, it’s part of one’s life and always will be. I also appreciate what effort others have put into their bikes and little do we know the positive effects this has on the younger generation who one day will be stepping into our shoes to carry on this tradition in the future. I was bitten in 1975 as a 12 year old staring at a monster of a bike (Gl1000 K1) and I have not looked back since, so I assume the same is still true and happening today.

Ok…….You can take my Picture off now……….Stuart gave me some medicine and it’s working fine……. ;_)

  6. Papajoe says:

Hi Ginger…….Nice to see you posting on the site, and yes I agree with your comments that it being part of the whole event that makes it so special, but whilst most wingers are content to be part of the BLP…which really stands for …” Brilliant Lights Papajoe ” …….LOL……..Only kidding……I am one of those shy retiring kind of men who like people to go …..Ohhhh & Ahhhhh when I ride past them and shout………”Look at that one” Maybe I should change my name to Libber Archie….LOL…..Cheers and ride safe

  7. Ginger says:

Does it matter who is the best Wing as long as we join in. Every Wing which took part was the best for being there surely? I know that sounds bad – Papajoe big respect to you and long may it continue but for me its the taking part actually coming. Great site for Wingers to voice opinions – Thank you

I wanted to be the first to leave a comment on the welcome page to congratulate you all on a wonderful web site which is truely for the benefit of all who own or are interested in the Goldwing motorcycle. I realise that this is the start of a new begining and with that history has been made. I am so proud to be a part of this Federation and I look forward to many years of enjoyment and friendship with others who want the freedom of choice and benefits of what this organisation has to offer. Again thank you for helping me spread my wings and be free.

    Steven Fox
