Hi Dave,
I have a 2007 GL1800AA on which the grips and seat heating have failed. This has been traced to a faulty connector. My dealer tells me Honda won’t supply the connector, only the whole main loom (approx £2,000!!). Have you come across this before and do you have any suggestions for a cheaper solution, a non standard connector perhaps?
Cheers
Richard
Dave,
I have a UK spec 2011 wing,
I have now fitted the additional lamp holders in the bottom rear tail light fittings. I have routed the cables though the side boxes up under the seat for connection.
Can you give any advise as to how I should connect them!
Lamp holders are the three wire for both brake and tail.
Regards
Mike
Hi Mike
You are looking for the 14 pin white connector block just below the top box under the seat, you will need to splice into the Brown/White to give you side lights and Green/Red for brake lights also Green is the earth but you can make an earth from anywhere on the frame.
DO NOT use Scotch connectors the best way is to cut and solder then heat shrink the wires making short tails about 50mm long then put proper connectors to join the wires together this way if you ever need to remove anything you won’t need to cut the wires again.

hello, tor, im having the same issue as you on a 2001 gl1800 in florida. can you tell me more about it.
Hi Paul
As the posts between myself and Tor went he changed the second ECM with a brand new one he had ordered this has so far fixed the first problem he had with the MIL blinking 26 times (left knock sensor).
Have you checked the left knock sensor cables?
MIL 26 BLINKS (LEFT KNOCK SENSOR)
1. Left Knock Sensor Connection Inspection
Turn the ignition switch to “OFF.”
Remove the left front exhaust pipe protector
Disconnect the left knock sensor 1P connector.
Check the connector for loose contacts or corroded terminal also check for any damage.
Connect the left knock sensor 1P connector back again.
Start the engine and hold the engine speed above 2,500 rpm for 10 seconds or more.
Check that the MIL blinks.
Is the MIL blinking?
NO – Temporary failure; the system is normal.
YES – GO TO STEP 2.
2. Left Knock Sensor Line Short Circuit Inspection
Turn the ignition switch to “OFF.”
Disconnect the left knock sensor 1P connector and ECM 22P grey connector. You will need to remove the top shelter to gain access to the ECM.
Check for continuity between the wire harness side knock sensor 1P connector terminal and ground.
Is there continuity?
YES – Short circuit in the Blue wire. Repair wire and check again.
NO – GO TO STEP 3.
3. Left Knock Sensor Line Continuity Inspection
Check for continuity between the Blue wire terminals of the wire harness side knock sensor connector and ECM 22P grey connector.
Is there continuity?
NO – Open circuit in the Blue wire. Again repair wire and recheck.
YES – GO TO STEP 4.
4. Left Knock Sensor Operation Inspection
Replace the knock sensor with a new one. This is hopefully the cheaper option.
Start the engine and hold the engine speed above 2,500 rpm for 10 seconds or more.
Check that the MIL blinks.
Is the MIL blinking?
NO – Original knock sensor is faulty.
YES – Replace the ECM with a new one and inspect again.
Please let me know how you get on with this problem.
Regards
Dave
Dave my 1500 had a flat battery so I jump started it & went to use reverse but when I pressed reverse button the engine cutout,is this because battery is low on power.Gave the bike a little 5 minute run & still done same.
Hi Kev
There is a good chance that if the battery is absolutely flat that this may happen, can you put the battery on charge for at least 24hrs and check again if the problem still occurs then you will have to investigate further but first you need to know the battery is charged up and is ok.
Please let me know how you get on when the battery is charged.

Hi, my 1500 has just started to bleed the LCD on the left hand side, is this a problem if it goes completely,is it worth spending all that money to replace it.
Thanks
Wayne
Hi Wayne
Although the screen has started to bleed isn’t going to be a problem to the running of the bike other than you won’t be able see the information that is displayed on the centre screen. To replace it isn’t a very hard job to do, finding one might be and if you do it may cost quite a lot.

hi Dave
wow thanks a lot, we will know tomorrow if we can do it, the cylinder is off and our friend is trying to get inside it, if he cant do it tomorrow we will love to take your offer up as this goldwing means a lot to us

Hi Dave
We have recently purchased an old gl1100 interstate 1983, we are struggling with the master cylinder and we cant find one anywhere only kits,at this moment we cannot get into the master cylinder as its so rusted etc, would you know where we can get one from plse,
Many Thanks
Glenn
Hi Glenn
I am guessing this is the rear master cylinder you have got trouble with, if so I have had a quick look on the tinternet today and can only find a repair kit as well. There are a few breakers about that are worth a phone call just Google motorcycle breakers. Failing that can you get the old master cylinder off the bike?? If so you could post it to me to refurbish it.

Hi Dave, first I want to apologize for my english because I’m Thai. I have 2001 GL1800 and its 100,000 Km. now.
3 years ago I changed ECM once, that time the MIL blinks 24 (left O2) the engine ran very rich (black smoke and sooty plug) and won’t idle. Changed new ECM and everything back to normal.
Last 2 weeks the MIL blinks 26 (left knock sensor) and engine ran rich (sooty plug) and won’t idle again.
Could it be a problem from the ECM again?
I try to reset the ECM but it won’t help.
Hi Tor
Your English is very good and a lot better than my Thai.

Hi Dave,
Thank you for your reply, I checked knock sensor as you said and nothing wrong with it. After start engine for awhile its still blinks 26. Then I realize that I still have the old ECM. So I put the old ECM and the MIL went away. Is this the sign that I have to buy the 3rd. ECM.
?
Ps. The old ECM used to blinks 24 and can’t idle.
Regards,
Tor
Hi Tor
Now that you have put the first ECM back on has the old blinking 24 problem gone???.
If you have no “Blinking MIL” now I would stick with the first ECM for now and monitor it to see if it is ok.
Please let me know.
Regards
Dave P
Hi Dave,
Yes, after I put the first ECM back no any MIL light coming at all. I will test ride in a few day and let you know.
Regards,
Tor
Hi Dave,
Instead of put the first one, I’d order the new ECM and its came 2 days ago. After put it in, every thing back to normal. Test ride for about 40 km., checked spark plug and its look great.
So this is my 3rd. ECM, don’t know what cause it broke?
Regards,
Tor.
